Eat at these Los Angeles institutions

-- El Cholo -- El Cholo has been an LA institution for over 80 years serving up a wide array of Mexican dishes. They have four locations - in Los Angeles off Western close to downtown and Koreatown, as well as in Santa Monica, La Habra and Irvine. My favorite dishes are the albondigas soup, enchilada suiza, and fajitas.

-- Cole's French Dip -- Styled to look like a saloon and housed in a historic Los Angeles building in Historic Downtown, Cole's is the originator of the french dip. You order at the carving station as you enter, and your sandwich is then made to order. Besides roast beef, Cole's also offers french dips of Turkey, Lamb and Pastrami.

Tam O'Shanter -- A Scottish restaurant in Glendale, Tam O'Shanter has the feel of a lodge. Decorated with family plaids, they make an excellent prime rib. To start, try the Scotch Rarebit, it's a delicious mixture of beer, cheese and seasoning that is served with toasted bread. And for a more unique Scottish dinner, try the Toad in the Hole, filet mignon and onions served in a Yorkshire pudding.
